FOWLERVILLE, Mich. – The American Federation of Government Employees today announced its endorsement of Raja Krishnamoorthi for election to the U.S. Senate representing Illinois in the 2026 elections. The primary is March 17, and the general election is Nov. 3.
Krishnamoorthi has represented Illinois’ 8th congressional district since 2017. During his time in Congress, he has led oversight investigations to hold corporations accountable – reigning in Big Tobacco, Big Pharma, and other bad actors.
Krishnamoorthi is a proud immigrant and product of public housing, food stamps, and Peoria public schools. He worked on President Barack Obama’s successful 2004 Senate campaign, ran multiple small businesses, and served in state government as a public watchdog before being elected to Congress. He has fought to repeal President Trump’s cuts to Medicaid and food assistance programs and is running to ensure that all Illinois families can realize their full American Dream.
“AFGE members across Illinois know Raja as a leader who doesn’t just talk about supporting federal workers — he stands with us when it matters most,” AFGE District 7 National Vice President Jason Anderson said. “Time and again, Raja has been a trusted partner in our fight to protect and support the public servants that America depends on. He understands the challenges federal employees face every day, from rising costs to relentless political attacks on our work. We look forward to continuing to work alongside Raja to deliver the resources, funding, and protections working families need and deserve.”
AFGE’s decision to endorse Krishnamoorthi was not made lightly and was reached through conversations with the union’s leaders and members as part of AFGE’s endorsement process.
Krishnamoorthi spoke in support of the House passing the Protect America’s Workforce Act, which would restore federal workers’ collective bargaining rights, and has been an original cosponsor of the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act in each congressional session.
He and his wife, Priya, live in Schaumburg with their three children.
About 82,000 federal employees live in Illinois – caring for veterans, supporting the military, and getting Social Security recipients their benefits accurately and on time.
AFGE is the largest federal employee union in the country, representing more than 820,000 federal and D.C. government workers in all functions of government. AFGE represents nearly 43,000 federal employees in District 7, which includes Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
