KILLEEN, Texas –– The American Federation of Government Employees today announced its endorsement of Al Green for reelection to the U.S. House in the 2026 elections representing Texas’s revised 18th Congressional District. The statewide primary is March 3, and the general election is Nov. 3.
Rep. Green has represented the 9th Congressional District, covering the southwest portion of the Houston metropolitan area, for more than 20 years – fighting for those in society whose voices often go unheard. A native of New Orleans who was raised in Florida before relocating to Texas, Green cofounded a law firm after earning his law degree from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law in 1973 and spent 26 years as the justice of the peace in Harris County, Texas, before being elected to Congress in 2004. During this time, he also was president of the Houston branch of the NAACP for about a decade.
“In the great state of Texas, AFGE is proud to stand with leaders who put workers first, defend the federal workforce, and ensure our communities receive the high-quality public services they deserve,” AFGE District 10 National Vice President Cheryl Eliano said. “We value those who have consistently stood with AFGE families and understand the importance of having strong voices fighting for working people in Washington, which is why we proudly endorse Congressman Al Green for reelection.”
Rep. Green holds a 100% voting record on pro-labor issues and is a dues-paying union member of AFSCME Local Union 1550. He supports the Protecting the Right to Organize Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, and the Living American Wage Act – which would increase the minimum wage in the U.S. to $25 an hour. Green currently serves on the House Financial Services Committee and is ranking member on the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations.
About 250,000 federal employees live in Texas – caring for veterans, supporting the military, and getting Social Security recipients their benefits accurately and on time.
AFGE is the largest federal employee union in the country, representing more than 820,000 federal and D.C. government workers in all functions of government. AFGE represents more than 136,000 federal employees in District 10, which includes Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Panama, and Texas.
