TSA Union to Hold Boston Event Calling for TSA Bargaining Rights

(BOSTON)—The American Federation of Government Employees—the union for Transportation Security Administration employees—will hold an event on April 30 discussing current issues at Logan Airport and calling for full workplace rights at the agency. AFGE National Secretary-Treasurer J. David Cox, National Vice President Derrick Thomas and members of AFGE Local 2617 in Boston will be joined by Greater Boston Central Labor Council Executive Secretary-Treasurer Rich Rogers, who will voice his support for AFGE’s efforts. AFGE National Representative Frank Womack and Local 237 President Robert McNeill also will attend the event.
AFGE is actively seeking cosponsors for H.R. 1881, legislation that grants Transportation Security Officers the same collective bargaining rights and workforce protections as other federal workers and ends TSA’s flawed and unfair Performance and Accountability Standards System.
“It is no coincidence that the one federal agency that fails to observe workplace protections, suffers from a variety of dysfunctions,” Cox said. “TSOs ask only for the same rights as other federal workers, and simply want a systematic and fair manner to deal with real day-to-day issues, that when appropriately resolved, result in a strong, loyal workforce.”
“Since 2002, more than 1,600 TSOs in Massachusetts and New Hampshire have resigned or transferred because of workplace mistreatment,” added AFGE Local 2617 President AJ Castilla. “The time to support TSOs, who serve every day protecting the flying public, is long overdue.”
The Greater Boston Labor Council is a federation of 140 local unions and district councils and was chartered by the National AFL-CIO. The AFL-CIO—of which AFGE is a member—recently passed a resolution calling on the Obama administration and Congress to “ensure – through legislation or executive action – that TSOs can exercise the same rights as other workers in DHS.”
AFGE has been the only union to represent TSA employees since the agency's inception and with more than 10,000 members in 32 Locals across the country, is widely recognized as the TSA union. Local 2617 covers TSOs in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
