WASHINGTON – American Federation of Government Employees National President J. David Cox Sr. today issued the following statement regarding efforts to tie the paychecks of federal employees to alternatives to passage of a clean continuing resolution:
“The hostage crisis needs to stop. Federal employees’ wages and salaries are nobody’s bargaining chip. Nobody has the right to trade away the paychecks we earn for some other purpose or end. The American people have paid their taxes, and Congress must appropriate these tax dollars to reopen the government. No games. No bargaining. Just pass a clean continuing resolution now so federal employees can get back to providing services to the American people.
“For eight days, federal employees across the country have been either locked out of their jobs or forced to work without a paycheck. Though a small group of extremists in Congress are happy to wait even longer, our creditors are not so patient. We need to pay the rent, our utilities, our childcare, put food on the table and gas in the car. Federal employees want and need to work and be paid, and not be pawns in this disgraceful shutdown drama. The House of Representatives must swiftly pass the Senate’s clean CR to reopen all government agencies and allow federal workers to do what they do best – serve their country.”
