AFGE Mourns Loss of Minnesota Correctional Officer

An attack on one is an attack on all, federal union says

WASHINGTON – The American Federation of Government Employees offers condolences to the family and coworkers of Joseph Gomm, a Minnesota state correctional officer who was killed in the line of duty Wednesday.

“Joseph Gomm was a 16-year veteran of the Minnesota Department of Corrections and was just 45 years old when he was brutally murdered while doing his job,” said Michael Weber, president of AFGE Local 683, which represents federal correctional officers at FCI Sandstone, Minnesota.

“State and federal correctional officers go to work every day to keep our communities safe. We are all one team with one mission, and an attack on one is an attack on all.”

The four AFGE locals representing federal correctional officers in Minnesota also extend their condolences to the officer’s family, friends, and coworkers: Local 683 (FCI Sandstone), Local 801 (FCI Waseca), Local 3935 (FPC Duluth), and Local 3947 (FMC Rochester).

AFGE District 8 National Vice President Gregg James added, “Government employees like Joseph put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe. On behalf of the 700,000 government workers AFGE represents – including tens of thousands of correctional and law enforcement officers – I extend our deepest condolences to Joseph’s co-workers and his loved ones at this difficult time.”

An online fundraiser has been started to support Gomm’s family.
