WASHINGTON – Last night, in response to the to the passing of Congressman Mark Takai, J. David Cox, Sr., National President of the American Federation of Government Employees, representing 670,000 federal and D.C. government employees across the country, issued the following statement:
“Today, all AFGE members mourn the loss of a true friend of government employees. Congressman Mark Takai dedicated his life to serving others, whether it was in his community, while serving in the National Guard, or in elected office.
He demonstrated his unwavering commitment to good government in the House of Representatives as the Ranking Member of the Committee on Small Business's Subcommittee on Contracting and the Workforce. He was a steadfast champion for our military as a member of the House Committee on Armed Services. And, his efforts to get care for veterans who had participated in the cleanup of nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands will never be forgotten.
Congressman Takai always went above and beyond to ensure all Americans, including government employees, had the ability to pursue the American dream. Our union family, particularly our members who he represented in Hawaii’s first district, extend our thoughts and prayers to the Congressman’s family as they grieve the loss of this incredible man.”
