The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), the nation’s largest federal and DC government employees’ union, today expressed sadness over the passing of former Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter. He was 82.
“Although not always in sync with our positions, Specter stood by federal employees including sponsoring legislation to block privatization studies, enhance veterans care and support the Bureau of Prisons.
Specter was first elected to the Senate in 1980. He spent most of his political career as a moderate Republican. He switched to the Democratic Party in 2009 and lost in the Pennsylvania Democratic Senate primary the following year.
