“AFGE is deeply saddened by the passing of brother Bill Lucy. For more than 60 years, Bill was a leader in in our movement, fighting for workers, human and civil rights. From his leadership during the Memphis sanitation workers strike where he created the famous slogan, “I Am A Man!” to his founding of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, to his historic career with AFSCME, Bill’s impact improved the lives of workers – especially Black workers – across the country.
“Bill will be missed, but his legacy and spirit will live on through the lives of those he touched.”
