WASHINGTON – American Federation of Government Employees National President J. David Cox Sr. today issued the following statement:
"Legislation passed by the Michigan House of Representatives to address the funding problems in Detroit Public Schools fails to provide enough money to get the schools out of debt and unfairly targets teachers and staff by stripping them of their workplace rights, benefits, and protections.
"The House is exploiting the serious financial crisis in Detroit's public schools to carry out an anti-worker and anti-government agenda that will set up generations of students for failure. AFGE represents thousands of federal workers in the Detroit area, many with children in Detroit Public Schools. I call on Governor Snyder to publicly renounce the House-passed legislation and instead support the compromise legislation passed by the Michigan Senate."
