Unresolved Challenge Ballots 50
“DVA non-professional workers clearly voted for AFGE representation,” said AFGE National President Bobby L. Harnage. “It was a hard-fought and clear victory for AFGE in the non-professional unit.”
In order to declare a winner in a representation election, the FLRA requires that the frontrunner receive 50 percent, plus one vote, of all the ballots cast. It is expected that the FLRA will call for a run-off election between the two unions for the 3,800 employees in the professional unit.
“Those employees who are keeping America’s promise to our nation’s veterans recognize the need for collective AFGE action,” added Harnage. “Whether the issue is better pay for employees at DVA hospitals or a fully funded DVA budget, our union is leading the way and clearly the majority of these employees understood that.”
AFGE represents some 125,000 DVA employees nationwide. The addition of some 10,000 new bargaining unit employees in the non-professional unit brings to 60 percent the number of DVA employees represented by AFGE.
