WASHINGTON – American Federation of Government Employees National President J. David Cox Sr. today issued the following statement:
“Like so many Americans, my heart broke hearing the news that two more African-American men had been shot and killed by police officers. Alton Sterling was a father of five in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, while Philando Castile was a school cafeteria worker in St. Paul, Minneapolis, and member of the Teamsters.
“Then in Dallas, one or more snipers opened fire on local law enforcement officers who were protecting the right of community members to protest the recent shootings. At least five law enforcement officers were killed and seven others were wounded, along with several civilians. One of the officers killed was Brent Thompson of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit force, while the names of the others have not yet been made public. They all leave behind families and friends and colleagues.
“My heart cries out for justice for all of these lost lives. We must do better as a society than this.”
