(Gainesville, Fla.)—Professional employees working for the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) in the North Florida/South Georgia Health Care System, chose the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) as their representative in an election held October 9, 2002, in Gainesville, Fla.
Some 850 doctors, pharmacists, dentists, optometrists, registered nurses, and other DVA professionals in Valdosta, Tallahassee, Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Daytona Beach, Ocala and Inverness make up the new bargaining unit which will become part of AFGE Local 2779. The final election count was 299 for AFGE; 132 for No Union and 10 unresolved challenges.
The Membership and Organization Department gave credit to Local 2779’s organizing committee and its Local President, H. Jody Anderson, for the well-run campaign, which resulting in the union’s large margin of victory.
“Federal employees recognize the benefits of union representation, not only for themselves, but for the federal government and also the American people,” stated National President Bobby L. Harnage, Sr. “By working together with the DVA to improve it performance, the agency is better able to respond to the needs of our nation’s veterans.”
