WASHINGTON – Today, American Federation of Government Employees, AFL-CIO (AFGE) National President Everett Kelley released the following statement after President Joe Biden issued guidance instructing federal agencies to authorize up to four hours of administrative leave for workers to vote in state, local, and federal elections:
“One of the most effective ways to strengthen our democracy is by ensuring more Americans have the opportunity to participate and make their voice heard.
“Instructing agencies to provide leave for voting will not only directly help more Americans play a part in our democracy, it will once again showcase the power of the federal government as a model employer – encouraging other employers in the public and private sector to follow suit and ensure no working American ever has to choose between a paycheck and their right to vote.
“AFGE applauds President Biden for taking this practical, commonsense step to strengthen our democracy and ensure the voice of working Americans is represented at the ballot box.”
