BRIDGETON, N.J. – The American Federation of Government Employees today announced its endorsement of U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill for election as New Jersey’s next governor. The statewide election is Nov. 4.
Sherrill was first elected to Congress in November 2018, representing New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District, and has been reelected to the seat in each of the past three elections.
After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1994 among the first class of women eligible for combat roles on ships and aircraft, Sherrill spent nearly 10 years on active duty in the U.S. Navy before earning a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 2007. She was an assistant U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey from 2015 to 2016 before running for Congress.
“During her time in Congress, Rep. Sherrill has earned a 100 percent lifetime voting record from AFGE and the AFL-CIO on issues critical to union members and working families,” AFGE District 2 National Vice President David Gonzalez said. “As New Jersey’s next governor, Mikie Sherrill will fight to protect our social safety net programs like Social Security and Medicare and defend working people’s right to form and join a union.”
Sherrill is one of 223 U.S. House members currently supporting the Protecting America’s Workforce Act, which would overturn President Trump’s March executive order that stripped more than 1 million federal employees of their collective bargaining rights.
About 29,000 federal employees live in New Jersey – caring for veterans, supporting the military, and getting Social Security recipients their benefits accurately and on time.
AFGE is the largest federal employee union in the country, representing more than 800,000 federal and D.C. government workers in all functions of government. AFGE represents more than 51,000 federal employees in District 2, which includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
