Largest Federal Employee Union Endorses Minnesota’s Jake Johnson for Election to Congress

AFGE says Johnson will fight for federal employees and all working people
EAGAN, Minn. –– The American Federation of Government Employees proudly endorses Jake Johnson for election to Congress representing Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District in the 2026 elections. The statewide primary is Tuesday, Aug. 11, and the general election is Nov. 3.
“Jake Johnson understands what it means to stand up for workers because he’s spent his career doing exactly that,” AFGE District 8 National Vice President Ruark Hotopp said. “As a public-school teacher, Education Minnesota member, and longtime union leader, Jake has fought for fair wages, better working conditions, and stronger public services. He knows that when workers have a voice on the job, our communities are stronger. That’s why he’s the right choice to fight for federal workers and AFGE members in Congress.”
Johnson has pledged to protect collective bargaining rights, defend federal retirement benefits and pay, oppose arbitrary cuts to the federal workforce, restore workers’ rights, and stand against the privatization of government services. He also has two decades of leadership with the Rochester Education Association and Education Minnesota, where he helped improve wages and working conditions for more than 1,000 educators, nurses, and counselors.
AFGE previously endorsed Reps. Kelly Morrison (MN-03), Betty McCollum (MN-04), and Ilhan Omar (MN-05) for reelection to their seats.
More than 31,600 federal employees live in Minnesota – caring for veterans, supporting the military, and getting Social Security recipients their benefits accurately and on time.
AFGE is the largest federal employee union in the country, representing more than 820,000 federal and D.C. government workers in all functions of government. AFGE represents more than 42,600 federal employees in District 8, which includes Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
