KILLEEN, Texas — The American Federation of Government Employees today announced its endorsement of Mississippi’s Scott Colom for election to the U.S. Senate in the Nov. 3 election.
Colom is a Mississippi native, attorney, and three-term district attorney for Mississippi’s 16th Judicial District. In 2015, he made history by becoming the first Black district attorney elected in the district.
Throughout his career, Colom has focused on prosecuting violent crime while expanding rehabilitation programs and alternatives to incarceration for nonviolent offenders. His legal career also includes advocating for low-income Mississippians, serving as a municipal judge, and being nominated by President Biden to serve as a federal judge in 2022.
“Scott Colom has built his career around public service, accountability, and the belief that everyone deserves to be treated fairly,” said AFGE District 10 National Vice President Cheryl Eliano. “As a candidate for the U.S. Senate, he has emphasized protecting working families, improving access to healthcare, and creating economic opportunity. These are important issues for federal employees and the communities they serve. AFGE proudly endorses Scott Colom to be Mississippi’s next U.S. senator.”
More than 30,000 federal employees live in Mississippi – caring for veterans, supporting the military, and getting Social Security recipients their benefits accurately and on time.
AFGE is the largest federal employee union in the country, representing more than 820,000 federal and D.C. government workers in all functions of government. AFGE represents more than 136,000 federal employees in District 10, which includes Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Panama, and Texas.
