BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The American Federation of Government Employees today announced its endorsement of Denise Powell for election to the U.S. House representing Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District in the 2026 elections. She won the Democratic primary in May. The general election is Nov. 3.
A mom of two and small business owner, Powell stepped away from a successful career in corporate America following President Trump’s 2026 election to found an organization that has empowered hundreds of women in Nebraska to run for local office. She is running for an open seat in Congress serving Nebraskans in the greater Omaha area.
“Denise Powell is the best candidate to fight for federal workers and AFGE members in Nebraska and across the country,” AFGE District 8 National Vice President Ruark Hotopp said. “She understands the importance of strong public services and has demonstrated that commitment by fighting to keep Nebraska’s public tax dollars invested in public schools. Denise knows that investing in public employees means delivering better services for the American people, and she will be a strong advocate for federal workers, collective bargaining, and the public servants who keep our nation running.”
Powell has pledged to protect collective bargaining rights, oppose arbitrary cuts to the federal workforce, defend federal retirement and pay, and stand with veterans and the federal employees who serve them.
Nearly 10,000 federal employees live in Nebraska – caring for veterans, supporting the military, and getting Social Security recipients their benefits accurately and on time.
AFGE is the largest federal employee union in the country, representing more than 820,000 federal and D.C. government workers in all functions of government. AFGE represents nearly 43,000 federal employees in District 8, which includes Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
