RIVERDALE, Ga. –– The American Federation of Government Employees today announced its endorsement of Rep. Jim Clyburn for reelection to Congress representing South Carolina’s 6th Congressional District. The statewide primary is June 9, and the general election is Nov. 3.
Rep. Clyburn grew up in Sumter, S.C., and has served in Congress since 1993. He currently serves on the House Appropriations Committee, where he is the ranking member on the Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies.
“AFGE is proud to endorse Congressman Clyburn for reelection,” AFGE District 5 National Vice President Tatishka Thomas said. “He has been a strong champion for working people – in the private sector, in the federal government, and in D.C. His record speaks for itself, and our members know they have a real ally in Congress.”
Rep. Clyburn has long stood with the public-sector employees who keep our government running. He has opposed efforts to privatize federal jobs, supported fair pay for federal employees, and fought to protect the rights of workers in the federal and D.C. government. When it matters most, South Carolina’s public servants know Congressman Clyburn is in their corner.
More than 43,000 federal employees live in South Carolina — caring for veterans, supporting the military, protecting our food supply, and making sure Social Security recipients get their benefits accurately and on time.
AFGE is the largest federal employee union in the country, representing more than 820,000 federal and D.C. government workers in all functions of government. AFGE represents nearly 115,000 federal employees in District 5, which includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
