Largest Federal Employee Union Endorses Three Rhode Island Incumbents for Reelection to Congress
AFGE says Sen. Reed and Reps. Amo and Magaziner support federal workers and their rights
BRIDGETON, N.J. –– The American Federation of Government Employees today announced its endorsement of three members of Congress for reelection to their seats representing Rhode Island in the 2026 elections. The statewide primary is Wednesday, Sept. 9, and the general election is Nov. 3.
The endorsed candidates are U.S. Sen. Jack Reed and U.S. Reps. Gabe Amo (CD-1) and Seth Magaziner (CD-2).
All three lawmakers have been supportive of key AFGE priorities and are often co-sponsors of key bills. Most recently, they all cosponsored the Protect America’s Workforce Act (HR 2550), which would rescind President Trump’s March 2025 executive order banning collective bargaining for most of the federal workforce.
“These three lawmakers from Rhode Island are exceptionally pro-labor, pro-AFGE, and pro-federal employee,” AFGE District 2 National Vice President David Gonzalez said. “From Naval Station Newport to the VA Medical Center in Providence, Rhode Island’s federal workforce keeps our service members trained, our veterans cared for, and our communities safe. Senator Reed and Representatives Amo and Magaziner have shown up for these workers again and again. And at a moment when this administration is trying to gut the civil service and silence federal unions, we need them back in Washington fighting for us.”
About 12,000 federal employees live in Rhode Island – caring for veterans, supporting the military, and getting Social Security recipients their benefits accurately and on time.
AFGE is the largest federal employee union in the country, representing more than 820,000 federal and D.C. government workers in all functions of government. AFGE represents nearly 51,500 federal employees in District 2, which includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
