WASHINGTON –– The American Federation of Government Employees today announced its endorsement of Beth Macy for election to the U.S. House representing Virginia’s 6th Congressional District in the Nov. 3 election.
Macy was the first in her family to go to college and built her adult life in Roanoke, where she and her husband raised two kids on a reporter’s and a teacher’s salary, and where she worked for 25 years at The Roanoke Times. Beth covered the stories of people and communities across western Virginia.
“Beth Macy understands that a strong federal workforce is essential to delivering the services Americans depend on every day,” said AFGE District 4 National Vice President Christine Surrette. “At a time when federal employees face unprecedented challenges, we need leaders in Congress who recognize their contributions, respect their rights, and understand the importance of a strong and effective federal government. We believe Beth Macy will bring that commitment to Washington, and we are proud to support her candidacy.”
AFGE previously announced a slate of endorsed candidates from Virginia, including Tom Perriello for election to the U.S. House representing Virginia’s 5th Congressional District.
AFGE looks forward to working with leaders who know that protecting federal employees, defending collective bargaining rights, safeguarding civil service protections, and strengthening public services go hand in hand.
About 235,500 federal employees live in Virginia – caring for veterans, supporting the military, and getting Social Security recipients their benefits accurately and on time.
AFGE is the largest federal employee union in the country, representing more than 820,000 federal and D.C. government workers in all functions of government. District 4 represents about 43,000 employees in Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.
