WASHINGTON – American Federation of Government Employees National President Everett Kelley issued the following statement following the U.S. Department of Education’s announcement of new changes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program:
“On behalf of the 700,000 public servants AFGE represents, I thank President Biden for making these necessary changes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.
“For years our union has voiced flaws within the program and recently called on Secretary Cardona to take administrative action.
“Since its inception in 2007, the PSLF program has served as a recruiting tool for thousands of federal employees. However, due to issues within the program, workers have not been able to take advantage of the benefit.
“We are thankful to the Biden administration for making the overhaul of this program a priority and for fulfilling the promise of debt relief to those employees who have completed a decade of service.”
