WASHINGTON — American Federation of Government Employees National President J. David Cox Sr. issued the following statement regarding the death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia:
"AFGE joins the nation in mourning the death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. For the nearly three decades he served on the Court, he approached the job with a fervor for his personal brand of Constitutional jurisprudence. Justice Scalia's impact on our nation is unquestionable.
"A fitting tribute to his life and his life's work would be to ensure that the work of the Supreme Court continues uninterrupted, with a full compliment of justices on the bench. President Obama should immediately appoint a new justice and the Senate should speedily confirm the nominee.
"The Supreme Court plays an important role as the third branch of government under the Constitution. The members of the other branches of government must now act expeditiously to fulfill their Constitutional roles in nominating and confirming the next justice to sit on the Court.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and the entire Scalia family, especially the grandchildren he so loved."
