Leader of Federal Prisons Union Council Warns Against ‘Rush to Judgment’ as Investigation into Epstein Death Continues

Categories: BOP

Years of staffing shortages, mandatory overtime, and scarce resources to blame for poor working conditions at MCC and other federal prisons

WASHINGTON – American Federation of Government Employees Council of Prison Locals President Eric Young issued the following statement regarding the ongoing investigation into the apparent suicide of Jeffrey Epstein in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan:

“As Attorney General Barr has stated, there will be at least two full investigations into what happened. We don’t have all the facts today, and we will await the results of those investigations.

“Correctional officers work in a highly stressful environment, protecting this country every day from enemies foreign and domestic who are incarcerated inside our facilities. All the staff should be commended for working under those conditions, which are well-documented in the public.

“Years of severe staff shortages, mandatory overtime, and a serious lack of resources created this unfortunate situation. We cannot ignore these important factors in a rush to judgment to blame before an investigation is completed.  All the factors and irregularities will be divulged in time.”
