SAN DIEGO – Medical professionals delivering world-class care to our nation’s veterans at the San Diego VA Medical Center voted overwhelmingly this week to join the American Federation of Government Employees, the nation's largest federal employee union. The election brings union representation to nearly 500 medical professionals at the facility.
“Medical professionals at the San Diego VA sent a clear message that they want a strong voice to advocate for the highest standards of care for veterans,” said AFGE National President J. David Cox Sr. “We are proud to welcome these dedicated public employees into the AFGE family and we’re eager to get to work to improve working conditions for them and the quality of care they're able to provide to our nation's veterans.”
With this resounding victory, San Diego VA medical professionals join the more than 220,000 other VA employees across the country who are represented by AFGE.
“Medical professionals prove their dedication to veterans every day,” said AFGE National VA Council President Alma Lee. “They need the protection of a union so that they can speak up on behalf of quality veterans' health care. As the voice of more than 220,000 employees in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) we are honored to welcome this excellent new group from San Diego into our union.”
With the election complete, the San Diego employees will now be able to begin work on such patient-centered issues as adequate staff-to-patient ratios, safe and equitable shift assignments, and the security to advocate for high professional standards without fear of retaliation from management.
“These workers understand that the best way to amplify their voice at work and nationally is to unionize and mobilize," said AFGE District 12 National Vice President George McCubbin. "We’re honored to welcome them to our fight for quality veterans' health care and workers’ rights."
