(SILVER SPRING, MD)—On Wednesday, May 26th, Rep. Chris Van Hollen, the congressman representing Maryland's 8th District, addressed employees of the National Aeronautical Charting Office and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). After the congressman's speech, he discussed the employees' concerns on issues affecting the federal work force. The speech and meeting were hosted by Local 2703 of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), which represents employees of the National Aeronautical Charting Office (NACO), the federal entity that creates the official maps used by commercial airlines and U.S. military planes to navigate the nation's skies.
A robust discussion of pay issues and privatization of federal jobs was expected. NACO employees continue to work under threat of having their jobs contracted out to private firms, despite the security-sensitive nature of their work.
