(MINNEAPOLIS)-With approximately 12,000 Transportation Security Administration members at more than 100 airports in 36 Locals nationwide, the American Federation of Government Employees affirmed its position as the union of choice for TSA workers with the chartering of a new Local for Transportation Security Officers throughout Minnesota. AFGE will celebrate Local 899 and its new members with an event on Dec. 16 at Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport.
“AFGE has been standing with Transportation Security Officers for eight years, but this new Local means that TSOs in Minnesota will have a more local voice at work,” said AFGE District Eight National Vice President Jane Nygaard. “The new Local signifies a growing trend among TSOs to create local union structures while belonging to the largest—and most influential—federal employee union in the nation. AFGE is the only union that can offer this.”
Additionally, members of AFGE benefit from the union’s affiliation with the AFL-CIO.
“Unlike stand-alone unions, AFGE enjoys the AFL-CIO’s enormous political clout on Capitol Hill and across the country,” said AFGE National President John Gage. “Being a part of the AFL-CIO is being a part of the rich and proud history of the U.S. labor movement—an institution that is critical to our country and its middle class.”
The Dec. 16 charter event coincides with the AFL-CIO and AFGE’s National TSO Solidarity Week, which consists of events across the country. The Local 899 event will be held at Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport’s Metropolitan room (Lindbergh Terminal) from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
