(LAS VEGAS)-The American Federation of Government Employees, the union that represents TSA workers nationwide, will hold an event Tuesday, March 23 to call for full workplace protections for Transportation Security Officers. AFGE National President John Gage, National Secretary-Treasurer J. David Cox and National Vice President Eugene Hudson are scheduled to speak.
AFGE represents the entire TSA workforce and has approximately 10,000 TSA dues-paying members nationwide. The union years ago won the fight for Transportation Security Officers to be allowed to join the union; however, those workers still are denied basic workplace rights.
“AFGE repeatedly has, and continues to urge Congress to support efforts by President Obama to rescind the directive denying TSOs their rights by granting TSOs the same collective bargaining rights and workplace protections as those afforded other workers in DHS,” said AFGE National President John Gage. “AFGE urges Congress to continue its efforts to repeal the Aviation and Transportation Security Act footnote placing such overreaching discretion in the hands of the TSA administrator, and once and for all to place the 40,000 members of the TSO workforce under Title 5 protections—including the General Schedule for wages and promotions.”
The solidarity stand coincides with AFGE’s 2009 Human Rights Training Conference: Wisdom + Innovation = the Future of Labor. Just prior to the solidarity stand, conference attendees will hear from author and CNN contributor Roland S. Martin, who will discuss the totality of diversity and the minority perspective during the current economic downturn.
