Federal employees continued to seek more power and a voice on the job as thousands joined AFGE in 2024.
At the end of December 2024, AFGE’s net increase in membership stood at 7,400, a significant milestone in organizing considering the fact that more than 88,000 federal employees retired in 2024. AFGE continued to build on a 5.5% growth in 2023 that made us the fastest growing big union in the country.
AFGE was able to stay on track on the organizing front thanks to winning dozens of new unit elections where tens of thousands of workers voted for AFGE, including more than 2,600 new members from the Defense Health Agency (DHA).
A key initiative propelling this growth is our union’s Drive to 325 campaign, which aims to reach 325,000 members by the end of 2025.
“By emphasizing workplace empowerment and giving employees a stronger voice, AFGE has effectively engaged more federal workers and D.C. government workers,” said AFGE Membership and Organization (M&O) Director Dave Cann.
“This strategy has led to a more engaged and mobilized union, with members participating in initiatives to make real wins at work, including record-breaking wage increases for federal employees, notably the largest pay raise in history for TSA employees, as well as the negotiation of robust collective bargaining agreements,” he added. “With federal and D.C. government employees in the driver's seat, AFGE won’t just grow in numbers, but grow in power!”
