In a powerful rebuke of EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin’s actions against 139 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) employees, AFGE leaders and members of Congress have rallied to demand justice and accountability.
The targeted EPA workers, including scientists, engineers, and public health professionals, were placed on administrative leave after they signed a respectful and transparent letter raising critical concerns about the agency's operations and its undermined mission. These dedicated professionals now face unjust punishment merely for speaking truth to power and safeguarding public health.
At a recent press conference, AFGE National President Everett Kelley made clear that the union will fiercely defend these employees and the integrity of public service. "This isn’t just a threat to a few employees—it’s a threat to the entire civil service. And it’s a threat to every community that relies on clean air, clean water, and environmental justice," Kelley emphasized.
The controversial disciplinary actions, criticized by AFGE Council 238 President Justin Chen as attempts at intimidation and retaliation, have drawn national attention. "We will not be intimidated into silence," Chen affirmed, highlighting the resilience of EPA workers and their commitment to scientific integrity.
Members of Congress, including numerous Democrats, echoed AFGE’s call for the immediate reinstatement of the affected employees, labeling the administration’s move as politically motivated retaliation. They urged swift Congressional action to safeguard the EPA’s vital work, which protects public health and the environment.
AFGE continues to advocate fiercely for federal employees and remains committed to protecting the voices of those who courageously stand up to defend the public interest.
Since taking office in January 2025, President Trump has issued a series of unlawful executive orders, and taken several unlawful actions, seeking to shut down congressionally mandated agencies, fire and displace federal workers, outlaw their unions, and gut merit systems protections.
