AFGE Local 4060 representing 4,000 Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) employees are working with the agency to make sure employees stay safe in the face of misinformation and threats against FEMA employees helping with the hurricane relief efforts.
In a letter to bargaining unit employees, Local 4060 assured members that the union and FEMA leadership are united in their efforts to protect employees.
“Your safety is our highest priority. We will continue to monitor, assess, and address any security concerns that arise,” said Local 4060 officers. “We urge you to remain vigilant – if you see something, say something. If you feel an urgent threat, get to safety, and call 911 if appropriate, then report the situation to your supervisor.”
“FEMA has made substantial resources available through the FEMA Online Responder Protection Resource Page, providing tools and guidance for your physical and online security,” they added. “AFGE Local 4060 is committed to advocating for resources that support your mental health, including stress management, emotional resilience training and access to mental health services.”
Rightwing extremists and politicians have made a series of false claims that FEMA was withholding aid to some hurricane victims, that the agency ran out of money, and that all the money had gone to programs for illegal immigrants.
The fact-free allegations led to threats against FEMA officials, prompting the agency to pause some work and relocate personnel due to safety concerns. An armed man who made threats against FEMA workers was arrested. He told reporters he acted on social media reports that FEMA had intentionally withheld supplies for hurricane victims.
The threats and their impact have taken a toll on FEMA employees. Local 4060 urges employees to take care of their physical and mental health and reach out to the union, FEMA management, a friend, a coworker, whomever they feel comfortable sharing their concerns.
“We understand that long days, austere conditions, and the pressure to meet the needs of survivors can take a serious toll. In your dedication to helping others, you often put your own well-being aside. Taking care of your physical and mental health is essential for sustaining the important work you do,” they added. “Our FEMA union takes immense pride in our service, providing critical aid to the nation with compassion and dedication, even in the toughest circumstances. The union is here for you. Whether you are part of the bargaining unit or not, if you ever feel uncomfortable, afraid, believe your safety is at risk or feel your physical or mental health is compromised, please speak up.”
