Chaffetz to Succeed Issa as Chair of House Government Reform Committee

Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah will succeed Rep. Darrell Issa of California next year as chairman of the powerful House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Chaffetz, who heads the oversight panel’s subcommittee on national security, beat out Reps. Michael Turner and Jim Jordan for the chairmanship. In an interview with The Washington Post this week, he discussed federal employee issues that he will focus on.
Incoming Chairman Chaffetz has sponsored the following bills:
H.R. 3463, the Border Patrol Pay Reform Act, strongly supported by AFGE’s National Border Patrol Council, which would give Border Patrol agents stability and predictability in the pay and hours, preventing chaos in scheduling.
H.R. 4865, which would allow federal employees to invest the cash value of unused annual leave in their Thrift Savings Plan retirement accounts.
H.R. 249, which would require federal agencies to fire tax-delinquent federal employees.
H.R. 2560, which would cut federal agencies’ budgets by $111 billion.
In addition, Congressman Chaffetz has taken the following positions:
He voted for H.R. 933, which extended the federal employee pay freeze and cut agency budgets to the point of furloughs and hiring freezes.
He voted for the Ryan Budget, which would require federal employees to pay 5.5% of their salary more to their pension than now, which is the same as a 5.5% pay cut.
He voted to continue the government shutdown which began in October 2013, but eventually he voted for retroactive back pay for furloughed employees.
He voted against an anti-AFGE amendment that would have ended the ban on the controversial A-76 privatization process at DoD.
He voted against an anti-AFGE amendment that would have prevented DoD from insourcing for cost or performance reasons.
So from AFGE’s perspective, incoming Chairman Chaffetz has a mixed record on issues important to federal employees, but he has indicated that he hopes and expects to work with us. AFGE National President J. David Cox Sr. will be meeting with him in the near future.
