It’s Official: LEOs, Firefighters Won’t Have to Pay Penalty for Early TSP Withdrawal

Thanks to years of hard work by AFGE activists, the Senate and the House this week passed a bill that would eliminate a 10% early withdrawal penalty for federal law enforcement officers when they retire after age 50. The bill, which applies to those retiring after Dec. 31, 2015, will now go to President Obama for his signature.

AFGE Won Huge Victory for LEOs, Firefighters on TSP Early Withdrawal Bill

Arbitrator Tells BOP It’s Not OK to Discipline Someone Years after the Fact

Thanks to AFGE’s outstanding representation, an arbitrator recently overturned a suspension of a correctional officer from Federal Correctional Institution Tallahassee, Florida. The BOP officer was given a one-day suspension after an incident surrounding his forgetting to perform rounds at the special housing unit.

BOP Expands Use of Pepper Spray to All Staff at All Medium-Security Prisons

This Bill Ensures Retirement Fairness for Correctional Officers

Congress needs to pass an AFGE-backed bill recently introduced that would ensure retirement fairness for correctional officers who risk the lives every single day keeping the most dangerous felons behind bars. The bill, S. 380 – introduced by Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado, would exempt correctional officers who retire before age 55 with 20 years of service from the federal tax law’s 10% additional tax penalty for early withdrawals from the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP).

This Bill Could Save Correctional Officers’ Lives

A critical bill has been introduced in the Senate, and its passage could mean life or death for Bureau of Prisons officers. The bill, S. 368, would allow officers to carry their personal firearms while they commute to-and-from work by requiring wardens of BOP-operated institutions to provide a secure storage area located outside of the secure perimeter of those institutions.
