Ideas for Planning a Veterans Recognition Event

  • Include AFGE staff from Field Mobilization (Legislative and Political Organizer – LPO, and Membership and Organizing (National Organizer – NO), with planning event.
  • Partner with surrounding Locals.
  • Reach out to coalition members (i.e., Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO) for space to hold event.
  • Invite all veterans (both local members and bargaining unit) to event. (Use AFGE-created flyer and have AFGE send email blast to veterans within your BU.
  • Consider inviting nearby JROTC color guard to present the colors.
  • Capture event on video and/or photos, and send to AFGE to post in newsletter.
  • During event:
    • Award – Each Local recognize those veterans who have exemplified outstanding union membership through mentorship, legislative/political action, membership recruitment and PAC solicitation. Each vet who is recognized receives a AFGE Veterans lapel pin.
    • AFGE Veterans – Have veterans sign up to join the veterans program
    • Membership and Organizing – Using form 1187, recruit potential members to join each Local.
    • Legislative and Political – Provide legislative/political update, have attendees sign up for text alert and carry out grassroots activity (i.e., call to Congress, sign petition, write letter to Congress).
    • Political Action Committee (PAC) – Solicit Local members to join the AFGE PAC.
