Howard Egerman has committed his life to public service.
From 1969 to 1973, Howard was enlisted in the Navy and served in the Naval History Division in Washington, D.C. And, for the past 43 years, he has served residents of East Oakland, California, at the Social Security Administration. But his public service doesn't stop there.
Egerman also takes care of his co-workers as the national health and safety representative for SSA Council 220 employees nationwide. He participates in a joint SSA – AFGE Council 220 Health and Safety committee that addresses health and safety issues in SSA field operations offices, including ergonomics, indoor air quality, emergency preparedness, and even rodent and insect infestations. He advises locals in dealing with health and safety issues such as conducting workplace inspections, identifying hazards, and finding solutions locally and taking them to the national level as necessary.
That's not all – Egerman was chosen by his union brothers and sisters to be the Second Vice President of Local 3172, and represents Social Security field office employees in Northern and Central California and Northern Nevada.
His passion for serving his community did not get lost on the California State Assembly. For the past nine years, the assembly honors one veteran from each Assembly District as the 'Veteran of the Year.' Egerman was nominated by Assembly Member Rob Bonta and honored as Veteran of the Year from the 18th District.
Egerman said that, through all his years of service, AFGE had made it easier for him to give back.
“Without AFGE, I wouldn’t have been able to work for SSA for over 40 years,” he said. “AFGE keeps management honest.”
As the Veteran of the Year, Egerman, along with honorees from other districts, were invited to visit the Assembly floor to meet the member who nominated them and attend a luncheon at the Sacramento Convention Center.
