In a significant decision impacting the federal workforce, the Supreme Court lifted lower-court injunctions, enabling the current administration to proceed with its controversial plans for mass layoffs (RIFs) and restructuring of federal agencies.
AFGE immediately reaffirmed its commitment to challenging these layoffs, highlighting the potential harm to public services that millions of Americans depend upon daily.
AFGE National President Everett Kelley expressed deep disappointment in the ruling. "No president should have unchecked authority to restructure government agencies and eliminate tens of thousands of public service positions that keep our country running," Kelley said.
Notably, the Supreme Court's decision did not address the legality of specific restructuring efforts, leaving open avenues for further legal action. AFGE maintains its position that these layoffs violate federal law and is preparing for continued legal challenges.
AFGE also called on Congress to assert its constitutional authority over federal funding and agency structures, stressing the potential harm to government services if lawmakers fail to act.
Beyond the legal implications, AFGE highlighted the human cost of the Supreme Court's decision, emphasizing the anxiety and uncertainty facing thousands of federal employees and their families. These workers provide crucial support to veterans, seniors, small businesses, Social Security recipients, and education programs nationwide.
“This isn’t just some Washington, D.C. legal tussle — it’s a life-altering decision for tens of thousands of American families,” said Kelley. “Federal employees across the country will sit at their dinner tables tonight with their layoff notice next to a pile of bills, knowing the Supreme Court’s action just changed their lives forever, and they’re wondering what they’re going to do next to make ends meet. They didn’t ask for this - all they wanted to do was serve their country: supporting the war fighter at Defense, our seniors at the Social Security Administration, our kids at the Department of Education, and other agencies providing vital services the American people rely on.”
AFGE also pointed to the broader implications of the administration’s plans, recalling earlier disruptions caused by staffing cuts initiated by Elon Musk. The union warned that similar dysfunction could return if the administration proceeds unchecked.
Despite this setback, AFGE members remain committed to defending both public employees and the essential services we deliver.
