AFGE Local 12 joined with AFGE District 14 to host a series of organizing events in the metro D.C. region to talk with government workers about the importance of being active members in their union.
The power of organized labor stems from the involvement of workers and our ability to come together to ensure we have the workplaces that we deserve. It is no secret that the current administration has worked overtime to push government workers out of the workforce and make the workplace untenable. A critical way for us to counter these attacks is to be active in our locals.
“As the President of AFGE Local 12, I am proud to announce that we hosted two pivotal membership and organizing events on April 8 and 10, 2026,” said AFGE Local 12 President LaRhonda Gamble. “These gatherings are essential for uniting our members and providing them with the necessary information that assists them in their work and personal lives.”
AFGE Local 12 proudly represents workers at the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). During this organizing drive, workers and union members heard from AFGE Local 12 President LaRhonda Gamble, AFGE District 14 National Vice President Ottis Johnson, Jr., representatives from AFGE national departments such as Membership & Organization, Advocacy, and Women’s and Fair Practices, AFGE District 14 benefits managers Value Your Legacy and the D.C. area chapter of the Coalition of Labor Union Women.
“In a time when the voices of federal employees are more important than ever, we are committed to fostering solidarity and engagement. We are especially thankful for AFGE District 14, AFGE National Program Offices, and the DC Metro Chapter of CLUW for assisting us in this endeavor,” added Gamble. “Their support led to two successful events, and we look forward to partnering with them again soon. Together, we can strengthen our local union and ensure that every member feels informed, valued, and ready to take action.”
At the last event of the week attendees also heard from AFGE National President Everett Kelley who highlighted the attacks on federal workers, stressed the importance of becoming active members of AFGE and praised the work that AFGE Local 12 is doing to support DOL employees.
“Take a look at what they are trying to do to federal employees,” said AFGE President Kelley, referencing the actions of the Trump administration. “That will tell you all you need to know about why you should be a member of AFGE. The more members we get to join this fight, the stronger we become. If we stand together, there is nothing that can defeat us,” said Kelley.
