AFGE District 12 earlier this month hosted a weeklong training and evening retreat to celebrate Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day that fell on March 8.
A group of 30 leaders participated in AFGE District 12 Women in Leadership Training in Simi Valley, California, on March 6-10. They learned about leadership styles, how to manage effectively, and how to become better leaders in the workplace.
The group also visited the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and attended a program and dinner with Dr. Condoleezza Rice, a former Secretary of State and National Security Advisor.
“Where free unions and collective bargaining are forbidden, freedom is lost,” President Ronald Reagan once said.
AFGE Deputy Chief of Staff Amelia Glymph and Deputy General Counsel Cathy McQuiston sat on a panel where these women in leadership got inside knowledge of our great federation. They helped answer questions about leadership, such as one about ability to command respect in a room full of opposition like Condoleezza Rice who was able to craftily admonish the partisan crowd.
Glymph said she shared Rice’s sentiment.
“Last night when Secretary Rice spoke, she spoke about growing up during the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham, Alabama. She and her friends didn't have the opportunities white children had in her community. Her parents told her to overcome this. She had to be twice as good, and as a woman leader in the labor movement, I often feel the same way.”
This training/retreat was the first of its kind in the district, which hopes to make it an annual event.
