WASHINGTON – Today, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) has announced the selection of Rushab Sanghvi as General Counsel.
Sanghvi, who has been serving as acting General Counsel since the retirement of David Borer earlier this year, has spent the entirety of his legal career with AFGE, most recently as Deputy General Counsel at AFGE, and has demonstrated his commitment to defending the rights of federal employees.
"I am proud to place Rushab in charge of our legal team. His advocacy on behalf of federal employees is unmatched. AFGE's affiliates and members have continually praised his performance and work ethic,” said AFGE National President Everett Kelley. “Now more than ever, our union needs a dedicated and intelligent attorney like Rushab to lead our legal team as we defend the rights of federal employees and unions during the challenging times ahead."
Sanghvi started his career with AFGE as a legal intern and has held several roles with the union. Among those roles, he worked as a National Representative, organizing and representing federal employees in AFGE's Fourth District, and as a Legal Rights Attorney, successfully representing AFGE affiliates in dozens of arbitrations. Sanghvi has also represented AFGE and its members before the Merit Systems Protection Board, Federal Labor Relations Authority, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and in various federal courts, including the Federal and DC Circuits. In one notable case, he successfully argued on behalf of AFGE before the Federal Circuit against the Trump administration's interpretation of the Department of Veterans Affairs Accountability Act.
“I am grateful to President Kelley for his leadership in the labor movement and the ever-important fight to protect workers’ rights, and for his trust in my ability to lead AFGE’s legal team,” said Sanghvi. “AFGE’s hardworking members are the backbone of this country and our democracy. Despite recent attacks, I believe Americans recognize that federal employees are dedicated and unbiased professionals who play a necessary and essential role in communities all over the country. It has been an honor to serve our members and all federal employees, and I look forward to continuing to serve them in my new role.”
A native of New York and New Jersey, Sanghvi is a proud recipient of a GED. He went on to earn his undergraduate degree from the City University of New York, Baruch College, and his law degree from the George Washington University School of Law.
