AFGE ISSUES STATEMENT IN OBSERVANCE
OF NATIONAL DAY OF HONOR FOR MINORITY VETERANS
(WASHINGTON) The American Federation of Government Employees issued the following statement in observance of the National Day of Honor for minority veterans:
Today we honor those Americans of color who risked their lives, and in many cases gave up their lives, fighting on behalf of the United States of America. From Revolutionary War patriots to the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Civil War to today’s heroes in our contemporary, racially integrated military, Americans of color have defended and honored our nation when it has been time for them to serve. Yet there is more that we as Americans can do to repay these patriots than simply offer words – be they hollow or heartfelt. We, as Americans, must ensure that our veterans receive the care and support they need as they return home from tours of duty and as they grow in years. During a time in which rhetoric about “supporting our troops” is used widely, the Department of Veterans Affairs faces hiring freezes, staff and supply shortages, funding cuts, and increased fees on our veterans. It is time to hold our leaders’ feet to the fire and set rhetoric aside so that we do not break our nation’s promise to our veterans, now or in the future.
