WASHINGTON – The American Federation of Government Employees is restructuring key departments within its headquarters office to meet new challenges facing the 820,000 federal and D.C. government employees the union represents.
“As the challenges facing federal and D.C. government workers grow, so must our capacity to meet them head-on. To that end, we are restructuring key departments to sharpen our advocacy, strengthen our legislative efforts, and ensure our communications and education efforts reach every member, ally, and decision-maker who needs to hear our voice,” AFGE National President Everett Kelley said.
Under the new structure, the newly formed Advocacy Department will unite national staff focused on political, grassroots, community relations, communications, and education outreach to deliver one clear, powerful message while training and mobilizing AFGE members for action.
Andrew Huddleston, who has led AFGE’s Communications Department for the past seven years, has been named director of the Advocacy Department. With extensive experience in strategy, communications, and coalition-building, Huddleston will lead AFGE’s comprehensive advocacy agenda by coordinating political action, member engagement, and strategic communications to advance the union’s mission.
Brittany Holder, who has served as deputy communications director since 2022, has been named Director of Communications. With a decade of experience amplifying union voices, Holder will oversee AFGE’s media strategy, public relations, digital communications, and education programs – ensuring AFGE remains a leading voice on the issues impacting its members and federal employees.
AFGE’s political and field mobilization staff form the other half of the Advocacy Department and will be headed by an as-yet-unnamed director.
The Legislative Department will remain an independent department under the direction of Daniel Horowitz, who has been named the permanent director after serving as acting legislative director since January. Horowitz, who has extensive experience leading a winning legislative strategy on government workforce issues, will head AFGE’s lobbying and coalition-building efforts on the Hill.
“Together, these leaders will help position AFGE not just to respond to attacks – but to set the agenda and protect the rights, dignity, and integrity of public servants,” Kelley said.
