LINCOLN, Neb. – The American Federation of Government Employees today announced its endorsement of Dan Osborn for election to the U.S. Senate representing Nebraska in the 2026 elections. The statewide primary is May 12, and the general election is Nov. 3.
Osborn is a Navy veteran, mechanic, union leader, and lifelong advocate for working families. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy after graduating high school, spending four years in active duty before joining the Nebraska Army National Guard.
“As a Nebraskan and lifelong federal employee, I am proud to say that AFGE gives its full and complete endorsement to Dan Osborn for election to the United States Senate,” AFGE District 8 National Vice President Ruark Hotopp said.
In 2004, Osborn began work as an industrial mechanic at the Kellogg’s plant in Omaha. As president of the local union, the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union Local 50G, he led a successful strike against the company in 2021 – defeating efforts to slash employee benefits and guaranteeing the factory will remain open through 2026.
“Recently, Nebraska has endured plant closures, escalating attacks on the federal employees who serve our communities, harmful tariff battles, and the longest government shutdown in American history. That shutdown forced most federal employees in Nebraska to either work without pay or face furloughs, uncertain when or even if their next paycheck would come. We have also watched the steady dismantling of critical federal agricultural research programs. Nebraskans deserve a senator who puts working families first, not billionaires or corporate interests,” Hotopp said.
“Dan Osborn has proven, on the picket line and across this state, that he will always stand with working people, including the federal employees who keep Nebraska running. He is a leader with a spine who will stand up to corporate greed and make sure federal employees, veterans, and working families finally have a real voice in Washington.”
Nearly 10,000 federal employees live in Nebraska – caring for veterans, supporting the military, and getting Social Security recipients their benefits accurately and on time.
AFGE is the largest federal employee union in the country, representing more than 820,000 federal and D.C. government workers in all functions of government. AFGE represents nearly 43,000 federal employees in District 8, which includes Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
