Dear Editor,
The Department of Defense’s proposal to slash the operating budget for DoD commissaries by 17% next year could spell the end of this valuable benefit to our military families. DoD’s ultimate objective, as detailed in a 2015 report by Boston Consulting Group, is to zero-out the entire commissary budget. This would force commissaries to slash wages and benefits for 15,500 commissary workers – many of whom are veterans or military spouses – and prevent them from continuing to offer 30% earned discounts to military families.
While the Pentagon can certainly save money by gutting the commissary benefit and paying commissary workers less, these savings will come at a steep cost to our military families and the working-class Americans who serve our military families at commissaries around the world. The commissary benefit is of incredible value to military families. Congress must reject any proposal that would decimate the commissaries.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
