Writing your members of Congress is an important way to help them hear from federal workers about the issues that matter to you. For Public Service Recognition Week, you can use the template letter below to craft your own message to your members of Congress, asking them to participate in this important event.
Dear Representative or Senator [CHOOSE ONE AND INSERT THEIR LAST NAME HERE],
My name is [INSERT YOUR NAME], I am a member of American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local [INSERT YOUR LOCAL NUMBER HERE], working as a [INSERT YOUR JOB HERE] at [INSERT YOUR AGENCY HERE] in [INSERT THE CITY AND STATE WHERE YOU WORK HERE LIKE SO: Washington, DC].
Each year the President and Congress designate the first full week of May as Public Service Recognition Week in honor of the men and women, like me, who serve America as government employees.
I hope you will join AFGE in celebrating our civilian and military public servants this year from May 3-9, 2020. Public Service Recognition Week highlights the accomplishments of the dedicated public servants who work tirelessly on behalf of all Americans every day.
Each day, our public servants go to work to care for our nation's veterans, protect our air and water, patrol our borders, inspect our food supply, ensure the health of our citizens, guard against threats to our national security, and so much more. Even in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, federal workers are risking their personal health and safety to continue serving the public. But we dedicated public servants rarely get the credit we deserve.
As a government employee, I took an oath to serve all Americans and I do so proudly every day. That's why I am asking that you use this week to show your support for government employees like me, who have dedicated our lives to public service.
You can do so by sharing a message of recognition on social media using the hashtag #PSRW and tagging my union, AFGE.
Thank you for participating in this important weeklong event and showing your support for federal employees like me.
Sincerely,
[INSERT YOUR NAME]
