AFGE has appointed members to the newly created Defense Health Agency (DHA) interim council in an effort to strengthen workers’ voice and union representation for 38,000 employees at the agency.
AFGE President Everett Kelley announced the 13 appointments on May 10. They are:
- Council President: Robert Mooney
- Executive Vice President: Angelina Torres
- Second Vice President: Mark De Unger
- Treasurer: Jodi Engler
- Secretary: Katrise Newman
- East Network: Maurice Gibbs
- Atlantic Network: Chevelle Beasley
- Central Network: Matt Pagliaro
- West Network: Terry Flemings
- Indo-Pacific/Pacific Rim Networks: Michelle Nicks
- National Capitol Region Network: David Pitts
- Continental Network: Earl “Rocky” Tasse
- Headquarters: Latricia Gray
The interim appointments will last until full council elections are held at a date to be determined. Once finalized, the DHA council will become one of the five largest agency-level bargaining units within AFGE.
Mooney said the immediate goal is to get the permanent council set up, which includes writing a bylaw and getting things ready for an election.
“This council has one chance to get this right,” he explained. “We’re building the foundation for all the people that come after us so that we have good rules and a good structure for all the people we’re going to represent. I think there is much expectation, and every council member understands that.”
The appointments come on the heels of an interim master labor agreement reached between AFGE and DHA that will improve working conditions for the bargaining unit employees AFGE represents.
AFGE already trained a group of locals on the new contract earlier this month and is in the process of setting up virtual training for more locals.
