Each February we recognize Black History Month as a time to honor Black culture, community, and contributions throughout American history. Our nation, AFGE, and the labor movement have been led by the important work, passion, intelligence, and advocacy of Black leaders and activists. Black history is American history – and AFGE history. Our union is using this month to honor that contribution and continue to stand in solidarity with our Black union family.
This year AFGE’s Women and Fair Practices Departments (WFP) and our constituency group, AFGE B.L.A.C.K., have planned events throughout the month of February. Join us and celebrate our union siblings!
Here’s our Black History Month programming:
- Feb. 14 at 12-2 p.m. – Diversity Workshop. As part of AFGE's Legislative and Grassroots Mobilization Conference, WFP will be hosting a Diversity Workshop in which all constituency groups, including AFGE B.L.A.C.K., will get the chance to outline their importance to the work of our federation.
- Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m.- 8:30 p.m. – We will be hosting a virtual Overview of AFGE B.L.A.C.K. during its monthly meeting.
- Feb. 26 at 11:30 a.m. -1 p.m. – AFGE Black History presentation: History of Black Labor in the U.S. Learn more about the role Black labor has played throughout American history, including the Labor Movement, Civil Rights Movement, and the fight for justice today.
- Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. – AFGE Black History presentation: History of Black Labor in the U.S. Learn more about the role Black labor has played throughout American history, including the Labor Movement, Civil Rights Movement, and the fight for justice today.
- Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. -9 p.m. – Conversation with Black AFGE Law Enforcement. This is a virtual panel where we will continue to discuss race, policing, protest, and unionism among the Black labor community.
