A recent AFGE town hall in Hawaii was a huge success as locals, staff, and members of Congress joined forces to make the federal government a better place to work.
Sen. Mazie Hirono and Rep. Ed Case joined AFGE Locals 1209, 1239, 1234, 1218 at a town hall at Honolulu International Airport in Hawaii to discuss the Federal Adjustment of Income Rates (FAIR) Act, Defense Health Agency merger, and working conditions of federal workers in the state. They also discussed the lack of funding that nurses and staff deal with at Tripler.
Hirono, the first Asian female member of the Senate, talked to AFGE members about keeping the government open, the FAIR Act, which she co-sponsors, and the locality pay adjustments that need to be made to support federal employees in Hawaii. She also discussed the importance of maintaining a diverse federal government that looks like the people it represents.
Case talked about the difficulties of getting his constituents what they need with the current make up of Congress. He is committed to visiting the Tripler Medical Center with one of the locals. He also talked about becoming a future co-sponsor of the FAIR Act.
About 30 AFGE members attended the town hall.
“I was glad to see so many members of AFGE turn out to meet with Senator Hirono and Rep. Ed Case,” said AFGE Legislative Political Organizer Ryan Mims, who organized the event. “These lawmakers determine our wages and working conditions as federal employees. It’s up to us as AFGE members and staff to make sure they know what we need to complete the mission. I love seeing union members turn out to push for a better workplace.”
