Holding signs that read “Dignity, Fairness, Respect”, a group of workers Nov. 21 stood in the rain in front of the Cincinnati VA hospital calling for better working conditions and fair treatment of the VA staff.
“What do we want? Fairness! When do we want it? Now!” chanted the workers represented by AFGE Local 2031. That fair treatment includes protections against unjust discipline.
“We’re hoping to see that managers and supervisors get trained on diversity, equity, and inclusion, and they get trained on how to treat the employees,” Local 2031 President Pamela Brown said at the rally. “If the changes are not made, we’ll be back out here.”
Brown said the local has filed several grievances, but it can’t keep on filing forever without changes from VA management. The picket was to spotlight the issue.
AFGE National Vice President for District 6 Arnold Scott was also at the rally and said the VA needs to treat employees equally.
“In order to have the best health care system for all the veterans, then you have to treat your employees right,” he said. “You can’t treat one group of employees one way and treat another group another way.”
