AFGE members will gather in Las Vegas next week for our union’s 43rd National Convention where members will elect national officers, discuss policies, and shape our union’s future.
This convention, which will be held Aug. 12-16, comes at a critical moment in our nation’s history as the presidential election a few months away will decide the future of all Americans, our democracy, and our freedom to belong to a union.
It also comes as our union turns 92 on Aug. 18. AFGE has been a fighter from the start. Throughout history, we have won against the odds, and this convention will decide how we want to carry on the fight that could become the hardest battle yet depending on who controls the While House and Congress comes January.
AFGE is in the fight to win because Together We Rise, United We triumph!
Here’s what you can expect at convention:
1. Hear from members of Congress, labor leaders
We have several speakers who care enormously about AFGE and the labor movement. On Monday, hear from Terry Melvin, president of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists and secretary-treasurer of the New York State AFL-CIO; Rep. Steven Horsford from Nevada; Susie Martinez, secretary-treasurer of the Nevada AFL-CIO; and Liz Shuler, president of the AFL-CIO.
On Tuesday, hear from Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto from Nevada and Rep. Bennie Thompson from Mississippi.
2. Elections for the three national officers
During the convention, AFGE will hold nominations and elections for the offices of National President, National Secretary-Treasurer, and National Vice President for Women and Fair Practices. Elections will be held Wednesday morning, followed by any required run-off. The winning candidates will be immediately sworn-in to office at the start of Thursday’s session.
3. Council elections, conventions
Several councils will hold elections for their officers during this convention. USCIS Council 119 and SSA Council 220 are also holding their conventions before our national convention begins.
4. Meet award winners
AFGE members are the heart and soul of our union. This convention, we’re proud to honor and celebrate those who have gone above and beyond to advocate for government workers and promote workers’ rights. We are awarding members in various aspects, including communications, organizing, human rights, and political action. We’re also honoring these three individuals:
- Joycelyn Westbrooks, VA Local 1633, for the Bernice Heffner Outstanding Women’s Achievement Award.
- Neil Frye, VA Local 2092, for the Philip Randolph–Hubert H. Humphrey Award.
- April Williams, VA Local 92, for the Ed Klein Political Action Award.
5. Learn about AI and how it affects union members
In this presentation, Jim Flynn, executive vice president of AFGE Council 222 at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, will outline a recent landmark decision by the Federal Labor Relations Authority (FLRA) concerning AI data rights for bargaining unit employees, as secured by AFGE Council 222.
The case stems from HUD's refusal to negotiate artificial intelligence data rights for hundreds of employees at various resource call centers. Jim will delve into the implications of using employee-trained AI models and the potential release of this data into open-source repositories. Additionally, we will discuss the specific protections outlined in OMB Memo M-24-10 and how they intersect with AFGE Council 222's negotiation efforts. Join us to understand how this precedent-setting decision advances transparency, collective bargaining, and employee data rights in the age of artificial intelligence.
