August has been our union’s single best month of the already outstanding year on the organizing front as more and more government workers are joining AFGE to seek empowerment and voice on the job.
AFGE membership continued to inch upward in August with a net increase of 1,883 – the highest number in 2023.
“All Districts are doing extraordinary organizing. Every single district is growing. That is important because the trend is universal and not being driven by regional success. We’ve changed our model and are working everywhere,” said AFGE Membership and Organization Director Dave Cann.
In the past year AFGE organizers have held 722 events on top of running -- and winning -- tons of new unit and reorganizational elections.
“We are growing AFGE in part because staff are in the field working harder than ever. Our Broadstripes team has mapped the union and is bringing new tools to members and new members to their union.”
Our union’s focus on New Employees Orientations (NEOs) is also making a difference. As new hires are introduced to the job, they are also learning about AFGE and what it means to be a union member.
“Folks are hearing and understanding that AFGE is not just the union at their workplace that can provide great benefits and representation – AFGE is the workers at their workplace,” Cann explained.
Representational and legislative wins have also helped boost our membership numbers as workers want to be a part of a collective effort that’s making a difference. At TSA where officers have just received a 31% pay bump due to our persistence, for example, locals are having a recruitment contest that has led to 84 organizing events with extraordinary results.
New technology and new organizing techniques have allowed AFGE to reach out to employees at the worksite and those working remotely from home.
It’s no surprise that we surpassed this year’s goal of reaching a net gain of 8,000 members five months early in July.
