As election season heats up, AFGE’s District 14 organized several candidate forums to keep members informed about those looking to earn their vote.
Over the course of two nights in early September, hundreds of members from AFGE Districts 4 and 14 packed into conference rooms and Zoom calls to hear from the leading candidates running for the U.S. Senate seat in Maryland.
AFGE members engaged with Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, Congressman David Trone (MD-06), and Montgomery County Councilman William Jawando. All three candidates shared stories of their past and present lives in Maryland, and all three made strong commitments to continue supporting D.C. and federal workers in the fights ahead.
Notably, all three candidates firmly promised to support increased funding for vital government agencies, to ardently support D.C. Statehood, and to continue advocating for telework policies that benefit AFGE members in Maryland and across the country.
Also, in attendance at the forum were AFGE National President Everett Kelley and AFGE National Secretary Treasurer Eric Bunn Sr., who said that these forums give members the chance to hear directly from candidates who seek to represent them.
“It gives us the opportunity for those individuals who are running, to meet us and understand what our needs are,” said Bunn. “A lot of people make political promises, and they may not know our issues, but they want to get our votes. So, if we do support them, we can use these forums to hold them accountable for what they say in front of us.”
As the organizer of the week of forums, AFGE District 14 National Vice President Ottis Johnson Jr. says these forums are critical for AFGE members.
“The reason it’s important to have forums like this is we get to meet the candidate face to face,” said Johnson. “And they can understand what our concerns are and what the membership is actually looking for in someone who will be able to represent them now and in the future.”
Following the candidate forums, all three candidates were invited to attend an AFGE District 14 tailgate at the Washington Commanders game on Sept. 10. Congressman Trone took up the offer and attended to further engage with AFGE members on the critical issues impacting D.C. and federal workers and had a little fun while doing it too!
